This is responsible work in receiving, analyzing and assessing information of a criminal nature and disseminating information in the form of operational output.
An employee in this class requests and receives raw police data and other information, and analyzes, collates and disseminates information with general supervision. Duties include collating information pertaining to criminal activity and preparing assessments of police data, and detecting patterns, structures, trends and movements of the criminal.
Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed for conformance with prescribed policies and procedures of the Police Department.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Employees and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Employees.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Reviews available data and makes recommendations for allocation of resources and provides additional investigative leads
  • Observes, studies and gives particular attention to current filing and retrieval systems with the objective of making suggestive changes that would provide an effective, comprehensive and speedy retrieval
  • Evaluates and analyzes data to identify crime patterns, crime trends and hot spots
  • Creates bulletins, maps, charts and graphs to illustrate criminal activities and/or trends for possible assistance to Operational and/or Investigative personnel
  • Classifies and disseminates information and intelligence from internal and external sources, and promotes these sources to maintain mutual exchange of information
  • Responds to ad-hoc requests for data and/or reports from various units
  • Summarizes and prepares intelligence information


THE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Have a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in police science, criminology, mathematics, statistics, criminal justice, psychology, sociology or a related field.
2. Have at least one (1) year experience in the collection, analysis and interpretation of police data and writing reports that indicate relationships between various parties. Have experience in the use and operation of computers.
3. Additional qualifying work experience that includes the collection, analysis and interpretation of data and writing reports that indicate relationships between various parties, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

NOTE: Candidates will be required to successfully complete a background investigation which includes a polygraph examination prior to employment.

THE EXAMINATION AND HOW TO APPLY:
Depending on the number of applications and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. Successful applicants may be required to take a medical examination and/or pass a drug screening prior to appointment.

An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (form J204).
