This position will play an important role in the Engineering Design Group of the Public Works Engineering Division. The positionwill collaborate and coordinate with the group's Assistant Division Manager, other Engineers, Technicians, Construction Managers, Project Managers and Inspectors on the planning, design, and construction support of capital improvement projects for the City's Public Works Engineering Division (approximate average annual Capital Improvement budget of $90 Million).

The Engineering Divisionprovides a unique opportunity for engineers to work on a wide variety of complex capital improvement projects as they progress through their careers. The types of projects can cover the full spectrum of typical municipal infrastructure improvements associated with Public Works and partnering with the City's Environmental Services Department and Tacoma Public Utilities.

This position will be responsible for leading engineering teams and coordinating with engineering technicians, construction manager's project managers and other project stakeholders in the pursuit of fully developed and executedcapital projects.

The applicant selected for this position will co-locate with a group of dynamic and creative engineers, project managers, traffic engineers, and technicians all housed at the municipal building for The City of Tacoma, located in the heart of downtown Tacoma.

Key Activities
  • Plan, develop, coordinate and manage multi-million dollar engineering projects.
  • Scope definition, project accounting, preliminary design, construction estimating, team development and scheduling.
  • Preliminary to final design work, street or trail design, curb ramp design, landscape design, surface water calculations, site condition assessment, permitting, plan sheets, technical specifications and quantity calculations.
  • Work closely with stakeholders, including public and private agencies, utilities, business and property owners, engineering consultants, and internalCity stakeholders/team members to ensure an efficient and successful project.
  • Monitor project budgets, scope, schedule and workload of team members during design and construction.
  • Coordinate and partner with Public Works Street Operations Division to ensure the successful planning, design, and construction of facility capital projects. This particular activity requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Coordinate and partner with Environmental Services waste water or surface water and or Tacoma Public Utilities water department for capital improvement projects.
  • Manage the work of private professional engineering consultants when these outside services are necessary to supplement in-house planning, design, and or construction management efforts.
  • Coordinate and work with our active transportation planner in planning and constructing active transportation improvements for all modes of transportation including pedestrians as well as the bicyclist community.
  • Working closely with our ADA Coordinator for designing safe routes for individual's with disabilities.
  • Working closely with our Local Improvement District group to estimate, design and construct capital improvement projects for citizens of Tacoma.
  • Utilize low impact development techniques to design capital improvement projects for roads, trails and bike facilities.
  • Incorporate greenroads and sustainable techniques in engineering capital improvement projects.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • This is a professional environment with most activities occurring in an office setting with periodic field visits to active construction sites.
  • Periodic field work consists of in-the-field collaboration with Construction Managers and Inspectors that are part of each project's core team.
  • Position may require driving, sitting, standing, walking or climbing for long periods of time.

Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering, civil, mechanical, electrical engineering or a related fieldfrom an accredited four-year college or university,


AProfessional Engineering License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.

  • Five years of related engineering work experience in the Street and Utility Design.
  • Design using Auto CADD Civil 3D.
  • Efficient in Microsoft Office products

Current Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment.
