RESTRICTED TO PERMANENT EMPLOYEES OF THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THEIR INITIAL PROBATIONARY PERIOD.

Current employees in the unclassified service who meet the following criteria also qualify to participate in this exam: Unclassified employees who have attained permanent County status on a classified position by successful completion of the initial probationary period, with no break in service since leaving the classified service- OR -Full-time employees in the unclassified service with at least six months of full-time experience in the unclassified service at the time of filing.

NO OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE OR VERIFICATION OF EXPERIENCE LETTERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. NO WITHHOLDS WILL BE ALLOWED FOR THIS EXAMINATION.

DEFINITION:
Supervises the operations of a 24-hour medical facility or call center, an automatic call distribution system, or a 24-hour non-medical telephone operating facility.

Essential Job Functions

Screens emergency calls and handles them directly or refers calls to the proper person.

Performs the duties of a telephone operator or radio telephone operator.

Trains telephone operating personnel and radio telephone operators in techniques and procedures, and participates in evaluating their performance.

Trains staff on the use of emergency response systems, of the facility's automated call distribution system, and on other telephone operator duties.

Attends meetings in the absence of the higher-level supervisor.

Plans, assigns and evaluates the work of assigned personnel.

Reports unusual incidents and unsatisfactory working conditions to thefacility's supervisor.

Performs various clerical duties and incidental typing.

Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

OPTION I:One (1) year ofexperience with Los Angeles County at the level of Senior Telephone Operator*.

-OR-

OPTION II: Two (2) years of experience with Los Angeles County at the level of Telephone Operator**.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
  • Experienceas a telephone operator in a 24-hour medical facility or a 24-hourmedical call center.
  • Any additional experience in excess of the minimum requirements.


PHYSICAL CLASS II - LIGHT:
Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*Experience at the level of Senior Telephone Operatorin theLos Angeles Countyis defined as, leads the work of two (2) or more telephone operators using one of the following: an automatic call distribution system, a telephone systems switching console, or other automated telephone systems.

**Experience at the level of Telephone Operatorin the Los Angeles County is defined as, operates a telephone operations computerized system or console.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of two (2) parts:

Part I:An evaluation of experience based upon application information and desirable qualifications weighted 50%.

Part II: An Appraisal of Promotability designed to evaluate Knowledge and Skills,Problem Solving, Written and Oral Communication Skills, Interpersonal Effectiveness and Supervision weighted 50%.

APPLICANTS MUST RECEIVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON EACH WEIGHTED PART OFTHIS EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

TRANSFER OF SCORE:
Applicants that have taken identical test partsfor other exams within the last 12 months, will have their score for the identical test part(s) automatically transferred to this examination.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applications will be processed on an"as-received"basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

SPECIAL INFORMATION :
Appointees may be required to workany shiftincluding evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
