Unclassified Service : Current employees in the unclassified service who meet the following criteria also qualify to participate in this exam:
Restricted to permanent employees of the Los Angeles County Fire Department who havesuccessfully completed their initial probationary period. VERIFICATION OF EXPERIENCE :
- Unclassified employees who have attained permanent county status on a classified position by successful completion of the initial probationary period, with no break in service since leaving the classified service.
- Full-time employees in the unclassified service with at least six (6) months of full-time experience in the unclassified service at the time of filing.
NO OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE WILL BE ACCEPTED.WITHHOLD INFORMATION :
Permanent employees who have completed their initial probationary period and hold a qualifying payroll title may file for this examination if they arewithin six (6) months ofmeeting the experience by the last day of filing; however, the names of suchemployees will be withheld from the certification list until the requiredexperience is fully met. DEFINITION :
Receives requests for assistance and coordinates the dispatching of fire fighting or rescue units via the operation of the Computer Assisted Dispatch (CAD) system.CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS :
Positions allocable to this class receive technical and administrative supervision from a Supervising Fire Dispatcher and are responsible for the operation of communications equipment in dispatching the proper unit to the scene of an emergency. Incumbents are distinguished from the Fire Dispatcher I by their responsibility for acting as lead dispatcher, providing one-on-one training to new dispatchers, and executing a high degree of discretion, initiative, and independent judgment as to a course of action in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines. In addition to the knowledge and skills required to operate communications equipment, incumbents are required to exercise a thorough knowledge of the department's response procedures and exercise sound judgment in initiating and coordinating responses to 911 calls and other emergency situations that may affect the lives and safety of the public and other emergency personnel.
Essential Job Functions
- Transmits and receives coded and conventional messages, including 911 calls, to and from Fire stations and administrative, investigative, and field units via voice, digital, and video communication links.
- Receives and responds to requests for emergency services from the public via 911, electronically relayed from the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) centers or standard telephone system, and from other safety agencies.
- Provides pre-arrival emergency instructions in accordance with the Department's Emergency Medical Dispatch.
- Uses the CAD system to determine the identity and availability of the nearest fire fighting, rescue, or paramedic unit.
- Monitors, by radio, all emergency responses in progress and dispatches additional personnel and/or equipment as requested.
- Monitorsthe selection of transmitter and receiver sites and overrides as necessary.
- Operatescomputerized telephone equipment that enables dispatchers to maintain communications with public safety agencies, private safety agencies, and non-emergent agencies.
- Operates various systems which activate the Countywide and alphanumeric paging systems.
- May operate communications equipment in a mobile command post during emergency operations such as large incidents or natural disasters.
- Performs flight following and tracking of all aircraft resources within the Department as well as those from outside agencies assigned to incidents within the Department's jurisdiction.
- May train dispatcher personnel in basic communication center operations in accordance to existing policy and procedure.

One year of experience as a Fire Dispatcher I* in the service of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.TYPEWRITING SKILL REQUIREMENT
Ability to type at the rate of 30 net words per minute. REQUIRED CERTIFICATE(S) :
A Los Angeles County Fire Department 120-Hour Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD)** certification of completion.
A Los Angeles County Fire Department 500-Hour Call Taker** certificate of completion.
A Los Angeles County Fire Department 160-Hour Telephone Radio Operator** certificate of completion.LICENSE :
