This is an excellent opportunity to work for the Community Services Department working under the direction of the Community Services Recreation Specialist in the Summer Day Camp program.

The ideal candidate must possess effective and cooperative communication and interpersonal skills and work well in a variety environments. Excellent customer service skills and people skills are required.

This is a Non-Perm, Part-Time position.

Temporary/part-time employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 - June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7½% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice.  Further restrictions apply to CalPERS Retired Annuitants. 
Examples of Essential Duties
With direction from the Community Services Recreation Specialist:
  • Assists Recreation Specialist in a formal training for all Recreation Leaders
  • Coordinates responses to customer inquires pertaining to Summer Day Camp programs
  • Plans, directs and coordinates Summer Day Camp activities
  • Provides direction to Recreation Leaders
  • Coordinates supervision of participants on excursions including overseeing the safety of participants.
  • Recognizes and responds effectively to emergencies
  • Enforces policies, procedures and regulations at all times during Summer Day Camp hours
  • Conducts end of summer staff evaluations with the Recreation Specialist

The preceding functions have been provided as examples of the types of work performed by employees assigned to this job classification. The City at its discretion, may add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.
Knowledge of : Current trends in recreation programs and activities.

Ability to : Supervise program participants in a variety of environments, while creating positive relationships within the community; provide excellent customer service to the community at all times; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; operate personal computer and related software; maintain accurate records; record and retrieve information; lift or move up to 50 pounds without assistance, as well as heavier objects with assistance.

Education and Experience : High school graduation required.  One year of college and two years of experience plus related education and or training in coordination of recreation programs, or equivalent.

CPR/First Aid/AED Certificates : Must possess prior to appointment.
