The Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency serves as the lead agency for the emergency medical services system in the County and is responsible for coordinating all system participants in its jurisdiction, encompassing both public and private sectors. In California, counties have been given the primary responsibility for assuring that EMS systems are developed and implemented and for designating a local EMS agency.

The EMS Agency is responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the local EMS system. This includes establishing policies, addressing the financial aspects of system operation, and making provisions for collection, analysis, and dissemination of EMS related data. In addition, the EMS Agency is responsible for establishing operational policies and procedures; designating EMS base hospitals and specialty care centers, such as trauma centers; developing guidelines, standards and protocols for patient treatment and transfer; implementing a prehospital ALS program; certifying and accrediting prehospital medical care personnel; and approving EMS personnel training programs.

Los Angeles County has one of the largest EMS systems in the nation and, as one of the first to be developed, is known nationally and worldwide as a leader in the field of prehospital care. The system utilizes over 18,000 certified EMS personnel employed by fire departments, law enforcement, ambulance companies, hospitals and private organizations to provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To ensure access to high-quality, patient-centered, cost effective health care to Los Angeles County residents through direct services at DHS facilities and through collaboration with community and university partners.

DEFINITION:
Supervises the Ambulance Dispatchers in the Centralized Dispatch Unit of Patient Transportation Services.

Essential Job Functions
Supervises Ambulance Dispatchers and related personnel who are involved in arranging emergency and scheduled transportation for patients to and from County and non-County hospitals and institutions.

Prepares daily work schedule of Ambulance Dispatchers.

Recommends purchase of new equipment or modification of existing equipment and orders supplies.

Operates radio equipment to maintain communication with ambulance and EMS Agency personnel.

Performs and corrects data entry, prepares various reports, and utilizes computer equipment.

Maintains records of patient transportation requests.

In the event of a major emergency or disaster, participates as a member of the Departmental Operations Center, as needed.

Performs duties of Patient Transportation Supervisor on an emergency relief basis when needed.
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Option I:
One (1) year of experience at the level of Ambulance Dispatcher* dispatching ambulances to and from a large number of locations throughout Los Angeles County and surrounding counties.

Option II:
Two (2) years of experience as an Ambulance Medical Technician dispatching ambulances to and from a large number of locations throughout Los Angeles County and surrounding counties.

Physical Class II - Light:
Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 point limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*Experience at the level ofAmbulance Dispatcheris defined as:
Dispatches ambulances, vans and other vehicles to transport patients to and from County and non-County hospitals and institutions.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
  • Experience working withComputer Aided Dispatch software.
  • Any additional experience in excess of the Minimum Requirements.

Additional Information
Examination Content:
This examination will consist of an evaluation based upon application information and desirable qualifications weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or above on the examination in order to be added to the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
