This is unskilled and some semi-skilled work at the helper level in the construction, renovation, rehabilitation and restoration of public works projects.
An employee in this class performs a variety of unskilled and limited semi-skilled tasks assisting semi-skilled and skilled construction workers to complete job assignments. Employees in this class carry and care for tools, carry materials around job site, pick up and deliver materials to job sites, clean up and remove debris from job sites, and assist other employees in semi-skilled and skilled work.
Employees receive specific instructions and exercise little initiative or independent judgment in completing job assignments. Work is reviewed by direct observation while in progress or upon completion. The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. - Estimates materials needed and workload for projects
- Performs maintenance on city buildings; performs painting and drywall replacement
- Performs roadway repairs and maintenance.
- Repairs and restores existing electrical and plumbing systems
- Performs general carpentry and other construction type activities
- Installs doors, hardware, locks, etc.
- Develops proposals for projects; creates cost estimates
- Performs general property maintenance such as blowing leaves and dumping outside trash
- Performs related work as required

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union 769 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769. JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
HOW TO APPLY/ VETERAN INFORMATION:
- High School Diploma or equivalency; and
- One (1) to three (3) years of construction experience; and
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B with Air Brake (depending on department)
Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants will be required to pass a medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.
An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes.
