Position Information

The Department of Transportation and Public Works seeks qualified Extra-Help Maintenance Worker I's! Multiple positions are currently available at the Charles M. Schultz Sonoma County Airport and inthe Road Maintenance Division.

Starting salary up to$24.23/hour, depending on experience.


Public Works Maintenance Worker I - Extra-Help positionsperform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled light and heavy manual tasks related to road maintenance and related duties. The ideal candidate will be:

Work Assignment & Locations: Public Works Maintenance Workers may be assigned toa Road, Culvert, Traffic, or AirportCrew and may work atthe Airport or any of the Road Maintenance Yard locations including Healdsburg/Annapolis, Cotati, Sonoma, Guerneville, or Santa Rosa.

WorkingConditions: Duties require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, squatting, crouching, and grasping. Theyalso require the need to lift, carry, and push equipment, materials, and supplies weighing up to 100 pounds. Incumbents are required to work in close proximity to moving traffic and to work in all weather conditions including rain, cold, heat, and fumes, dust, and other air contaminants which may cause eye and skin irritation. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to climb ladders, ride personnel lifts, and work in confined spaces; to handle noise producing tools and equipment, and to drive a motorized vehicle. Incumbentswill be subject to random drug testing if they operate vehicles and/or equipment listed under the Federal Department of Transportation regulations requiring such testing. Theposition requires availabilityfor after hour emergency response.

EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT
Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis.Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for aCounty contribution towardmedical coverage. This employment list may also be used to fill future extra-help (temporary) vacancies as they occur during the active status of the list. The Civil Service title of this position is Maintenance Worker I.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and training which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally this would include: Some experience in road construction or maintenance work that includes the use of light mechanical machines, hand tools, and in performing heavy physical labor.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level, including special endorsements as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: basic construction materials; safety practices and tools commonly used in construction and maintenance; and preventive maintenance and safe operations of trucks, light construction equipment, machines and power tools.

Ability to: perform a variety of semiskilled manual maintenance and construction tasks for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions; safely operate light motorized machines and power tools; understand and follow oral and written instructions; follow basic safety policies and procedures; accurately complete simple report forms; work effectively with others; read and write English at a level appropriate for successful job performance; perform basic arithmetic calculations; and demonstrate physical strength, endurance and mechanical aptitude.
