This posting covers the Junior Engineer position within various Engineering Divisions of the Maintenance and Engineering (M&E) Department at the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART). This recruitment is targeting recent graduates who have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical, mechanical, civil, structural and/or computer engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. BART Engineering internship or infrastructure maintenance experience preferred.
Under general direction, this position performs entry-level engineering work and requires a maintenance friendly team player with a priority on safety, whether working in field engineering, project design, analysis, or process improvement areas.
Essential Job Functions
Safe execution of duties in office and field environments. Knowledge and understanding of functional areas within their Engineering discipline. Leadership and decision making skills. Assists in performing Engineering designs, design reviews, developing specifications, and preparing costs and quantity estimates for projects. Coordinates with various District Departments for Engineering support activities. Conducts or inspects project construction, installation and testing. Performs work and inspections safely in an operational environment using radio communications. Makes recommendations based on monitoring field work activities to ensure compliance with design, plans and procedures. Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence on project matters including field surveys, investigations, design Engineering changes, and correspondence with vendors and contractors. Discusses and coordinates Engineering design or construction project activities with other design Engineering staff and affected Engineering personnel. Applies prescribed techniques and procedures in accordance with established criteria to perform assigned tasks. Conducts field inspections and investigations. Assists in designing and specifying special testing and service equipment to troubleshoot and maintain various assets Assists in preparing Engineering designs, specification costs and quantity estimates for Engineering projects. Conducts special studies and prepares a variety of reports and correspondence. Ability to network with other departments throughout BART to ensure job success
A Bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
Must possess sufficient mobility to perform field inspections and investigations.
Experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis. A college degree is preferred.
Environmental Conditions: Office environment; field environment; exposure to computer screens.
May require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
Knowledge of :
Basic principles and practices of the engineering discipline to which assigned. Appropriate sources of engineering information.
Computer applications as applied to the solution of engineering problems. Engineering materials, equipment and methods.
Apply basic engineering principles and practices to the solution of engineering problems.
Conduct engineering studies and evaluations and write clear and concise reports. Analyze technical problems, including those involving computer hardware and software.
Learn engineering division procedures and applicable laws, codes and regulations. Interpret and prepare drawings and specifications.
Learn to prepare construction and/or installation cost estimates. Keep accurate records.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
