The Library serves the community with eight branches and virtual services in five of the seven cities in Solano County with a staff of 111 FTE. The Position

Under immediate supervision, the Library Aide performs a variety of clerical tasks in support of library operations.

The Library Aide is the trainee and entry level position of the Library Assistant series. The incumbent learns services and resources available to library customers, as well as typical library practices and techniques used while performing routine clerical tasks and technical work of limited scope, difficulty and complexity.

The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill full-time and part-time regular, limited-term, or extra-help positions as vacancies occur or the need arises.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS


Education: High school diploma or GED preferred;

AND


Typing Certificate: A typing certificate containing a minimum corrected NET speed of 40 words per minute is required. Please see "Document Submittal Requirements" section below for further details regarding this requirement;

AND


Experience: Three (3) months of work experience that demonstrates possession of and competency in the requisite knowledge and abilities such as the work experience listed below. Prior work experience in a Public Library is highly desirable.
  • Charges and discharges books and other library materials at the circulation desk using automated technology; computes, receives and records fines; registers and re-registers patrons for library cards; prepares collection agency notices; receives and dispatches shipment of books; makes repairs to library materials, including minor repairs to audiovisual and books.
  • Verifies, updates and enters library information into a computer; may assist with inventory, typing and filing in order to process order lists and other library materials; investigates location of library items (claims return procedure); shelves books as needed.
  • Explains use of library facilities and available services such as use of automated checkout machine; learns to explain and interpret library policy and procedures.
  • Sets up circulation and check-out desks; sorts and distributes items in daily delivery; checks-in hold items from daily delivery and shelves; answers telephone renewal line when needed.
  • May open safe; may balance cash drawer and prepare bank deposits.
    Assists with displays and exhibits; may train and instruct volunteers.

Solano County offers a cafeteria-style medical package with health benefits, offered through CalPERS. The County contribution for family coverage for the 2019 calendar year is $1,498.09 per month. The County offers a cash back provision for those who choose employee-only or who waive medical insurance coverage. The County may offer a supplemental contribution for employees enrolled in Employee plus Two or More coverage.

Dental and vision insurances for the employee and eligible dependents are paid 100% by the County.

Solano County participates in CalPERS retirement and contributes to Social Security.

The County observes 12 fixed, paid holidays per year.

Vacation is accrued at approximately 10 days per year for the first 3 years.

Sick leave accrues at approximately 12 days per year.

Employees are eligible to receive an additional 2.5% longevity pay, per level, after the completion of continuous service at 10, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years.

Extra-help employees who work less than 29 hours per week do not typically receive or accrue benefits of regular employees during their period of employment. All extra-help employees accrue .034 hours of Paid Time Off for every full hour worked.

Selection Process

06/05/19 - County Typing Test

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination listed. This position requires submittal of a valid Typing Certificate . All candidates must submit a copy of their typing certificate and word processing certificate by the final filing deadline. Failure to submit the required certificates will result in immediate disqualification from further consideration in the recruitment process.

Typing Certificate Requirements : The typing certificate must contain a minimum NET speed of 40 words per minute. It must be a timed 3 - 5 minute test, include the gross number of words typed per minute, and the number of errors. It may not be more than 12 months old at the time of application, and must be from an accredited school or a qualified agency with an examiner's signature. Certificates obtained through the internet (online) will not be accepted.

Certificate Testing

The County is offering a Typing test at no cost, for applicants only, on June 5, 2019 , 1:00PM - 4:00PM , for the Library Aide recruitment only. This is the only date available. Interested applicants who have completed and submitted the recruitment application must send an email to recruitment@solanocounty.com no later than 12:00pm, June 3, 2019.

If applicants are unable to attend the County certificate testing, applicants must still submit a copy of a valid certificate by the final filing deadline. Test/certification results may not be more than 12-months old at the time of application, to include test results that were proctored by Solano County.

Independent travel may be required.

Some positions in this class may require bilingual skills.

Incumbents of trainee positions allocated to this class should demonstrate necessary knowledge and abilities to be promoted to Library Assistant within 18 months of appointment.

Veterans Preference Points

To be eligible, applicant must have served at least 181 consecutive days of active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions. A COPY OF THE DD 214, SHOWING DISCHARGE TYPE (GENERALLY COPY 4), MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT BY THE FINAL FILING DATE. Applicants who have a service connected disability must also submit a recent award letter from the VA stating they are receiving disability benefits for service connected reasons.

Veteran applicants for initial County employment with an honorable or general under conditions discharge shall receive five (5) points added to their combined score.
